Today we have a guest post from a good friend, Emma. I absolutely LOVED her blog post, so I hope you enjoy it as well! ❤
Something I often struggle with is when I depend too much on what others say about me, and eventually, I start to believe that that is who I am. It’s the negative things they say that get me down, which causes me to hole up and withdraw from things I normally do with eagerness. There are so many people who fall into this trap. It can spill into social media, also, when you think you have to act a certain way or wear certain clothes to fit in or get enough likes/views, so much that you lose your uniqueness and you’ve just become another person in the crowd that makes up our world. But God says that we are to be aliens in this world for Christ. How are people gonna know that we’re Christians if we act just like the world? We’ve gotta be different if we wanna make a difference.
1 Peter 2:11 says, “Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers…” (italics added).
“Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” -Matthew 5:15-16
And it all starts with who you let define you- whose words you really let get into your brain. You know, if we only listened to what God said about us, we wouldn’t have any of those problems. We would be unashamed and unafraid to do what He calls us to do and be. God says that we are perfect in His eyes because of what Jesus has done, and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made! Seriously, hallelujah! Praise the Lord!!
“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable” (1 Corinthians 12:18-20).
If we could just embrace those facts and believe that it’s true- because it is- how different would our lives be! We could listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings without being afraid of what people- who are created beings- say about us because the CREATOR of ALL says differently! We can be different and unique for Christ and live for Him!
Don’t let people determine who you are- let God do that. Embrace the truth! Live life abundantly! Who cares what other people say about you? You’ve got God on your side, and He’ll help you do great things for Him!
And what’s more important- the temporary or the eternal? The here-and-now or your future in Christ?
My friend sent me a song the other day that really speaks this truth. In “You Define Me” by Kim Walker-Smith, it says:
No whisper can accuse/No rumour can undo/The words You speak over me/No lie can ever break/No shame can ever steal/The words You speak over me/You’re speaking over me!//Only Your words, define me/You tell me who I am/Only Your love, can hold me/You make me who I am/You define me/You define me
Amen to that!!
My mom told us this simile to help us understand: we are to be like a duck. It’s got oil on its feathers so that the water just slides off its back, keeping it dry and waterproof. So let the words of others just slide off and let them go- you’ve got the Word of God as your defense!!
So I challenge you to only let what God says about you matter. Only His words. You are one of a kind, and what others say about you does. not. matter. It doesn’t matter! You know the truth- so embrace it! You got this! I’m praying for y’all.
Special thanks to Sisters Creative for allowing me to share on their amazing and uplifting blog!!
